“Speed Racer,” the summer tentpole from the Wachowski Brothers, will apparently close this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Stu Van Airsdale at The Reeler says the Emile Hirsch-Christina Ricci epic will bow on May 6, three days before it officially arrives in theaters, and that tickets will supposedly be available to the public. (I’m still waiting for Tribeca’s promised explanation of how tickets to last year’s “Spider-Man 3” premiere were distributed to the public). The festival’s chief apologist, that is Mr. Van Airsdale, adds the lineup will also include “Tennessee” with that much-respected thespian Mariah Carey, and a documentary about AIDS orphans in Africa produced by another cinema great, Madonna. I’m sure these credibility-boosters will all help Bob and Jane’s faltering festival. Speaking of tentpoles, Coming Soon is reporting out of ShoWest that the first big release of Hollywood’s “summer” season, “Speed Racer,” will hit theaters worldwide on April 30, two days earlier than scheduled. It wasn’t all that long ago that the season began on Memorial Day.
