There are some good laughs in Jonathan Kasdan’s first feature, but there’s nothing terribly new or special in this comedy about a Columbia-bound high school senior (Dylan O’Brien) who meets an artistic girl (Britt Robertson) and they bond over their aspirations to lose their mutual virginity to other people.

As generic as its title, it’s obvious from the first scene that these two will get together, and the obstacles introduced in Kasdan’s script never seem terribly convincing. Basically a glorified two-hander (the guy has a pair of geeky pals and a younger sister and she has a boorish boyfriend), “The First Time” takes place among privileged Southern California whose biggest problem is their parents divorced.

Britt Anderson, who’s little known outside TV, comes off like a younger Renee Zellweger. The male lead is a tad too hunky for his role. The director is the son of director Lawrence Kasdan and brother of director Jake Kasdan.
