Sony Pictures Classics is in talks for U.S. rights to the sports comedy “Rudo y Cursi,” a Spanish-language reunion of Mexican actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna (“Y Tu Mama Tambien”) set to premiere on Jan. 16 at the Sundance Film Festival. The director is Carlos Cuaron, who co-wrote “Y Tu Mama” with his brother Alfonso, who helmed the earlier film. According to the IMDB page for “Rudo y Cursi,” the U.S. rights are currently held by Focus Features and its parent company Universal has it for international (both logos are on this poster, and a Universal rep is listed for the film in Sundance’s official publicity contacts list). Focus frequently sells off U.S. rights, such as Pedro Almodovar’s SPC-distributed “Bad Education,” which also starred Bernal.
