Sundance: The New ‘Sunshine’
It’s got the same producers, Alan Arkin as a foxy grandpa and even another van, as well as being set in Albuquerque. But “Sunshine Cleaners” is not another huge crowd pleaser like “Little Miss Sunshine” though there is lots to like in this much darker comedy by New Zealander Christine Jeffs (the dreadful Gwyneth Paltrow “Sylvia”) especially its stars, two of the most appealing actresses working in movies today, Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. They play widower Arkin’s daughters, who go into business cleaning up the scenes of crimes and suicides. It’s full of laughs and fine scenes (including a shirtless one with the newly buff Steve Zahn as Adams’ married boyfriend), but it never really builds to a totally satisfying conclusion.
