So how can the brilliant “Pan’s Labyrinth” lose the award for Foreign Language Film to Germany’s “The Lives of Others” (an excellent film, incidentally) after winning three Oscars in other categories? Easy, all academy members could vote in those other categories, but the foreign-language vote is limited to a very select number of people who have seen all five nominees at academy-sanctioned screenings. And that was one classy montage they put together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the category. It almost made me want to see “Life is Beautiful” again. Almost.
