Reviewing the romantic comedy “Catch and Release” (which dropped an alarming 66 percent during its second weekend), Kyle Smith wrote: “One of Gray’s friends is played by Kevin Smith — the ‘Clerks’ director and Silent Bob creator who this time speaks. What he ought to say is ‘Get Jenny Craig on the phone.’ If this movie weren’t being shown in widescreen, you couldn’t even see all of him as he thunders through the house in a striped bathrobe the size of a parachute.”
“Catch and Release” was shot way back in 2005 and spent some time on the shelf. The self-deprecating Kevin Smith (no relation to Kyle, incidentally) reports on his heavily scatological blog that his weight situation, well, ballooned after that. Describing a TV pilot he shot more recently for Showtime:
“Iâm f— huge in the show. And I donât mean that as some kind of industry euphemism for ‘genius’; I mean huge as in f—- rotund. Fatter than fat. I make the me in ‘Catch & Release’ look thin. Thank God Iâm dropping weight now.”
Before Kyle’s review was published, Kevin turned not to Jenny Craig but to the OptiFast all-liquid diet, which he’s been on before. Since the beginning of the year, Kevin’s dropped 22 pounds. Eventually he’ll fit on a standard TV screen.
