From V.A. Musetto at Tokyo Filmex: Just when I had my jet lag under control I suffered a setback when the fire alarm in my hotel went off in the middle of the night. It was a false alarm, but I had trouble falling asleep again. Come morning, the Daily Yomiuri, an English-language newspaper, reported that Japan was suffering colder than normal temperatures for this time of year. For northern Japan, this meant heavy snow; for Tokyo, it meant a brisk 59 degrees F. The International Herald Tribune, meanwhile, reported that Japan had started photographing and fingerprinting all foreign visitors. Fortunately, I had missed this new rule by just a few days. In less-distressing news, the Trib said that young Japanese men were trying to look slimmer and “cuter” while their female counterparts were becoming “roomier.” On my way to the movies, I passed a cute female cop with a chic haircut who definitely was not becoming “roomier.” I gave her a big, bright smile; she went out of her way to repay me by handing me an English-language map of the area. She made my day, and gave me a chance to use one of the few Japanese words I know: Arigato, or thank you.(In NYC, I would have been told to “move along.”) As for films, I had a good time watching “Don`t Laugh at My Romance,” a sweet Japanese comedy shot along the lines of the mumblecore movies in the US. (If you don`t know what mumblecore is, you have not been reading my reviews.) Stay tuned to this blog for more reports from Tokyo Filmex, which runs until Sunday night.
