Tokyo story 3
From the Filmex festival in Tokyo: I have no idea who will take the best-actress prize at Filmex on Sunday night, but I would give it to Li Yi-Jie, star of “When Love Comes,” the story of a polygamous Taiwanese family. As if home life was not already a mess, 16-year-old Laichun (Li) discovers she is pregnant and the father of her child has run off to parts unknown. Li`s performance hits all the right notes as a woman conflicted about becoming a mom at such a tender age. The movie, directed by Chang Tso-chi, has already garnered the best-film prize at the Golden Horse awards, Taiwan`s version of the Oscars. Li was part of a Q&A after the screening here, but since it was conducted in Japanese and Mandarian, two languages I know not, I wasn`t sure what the cute, short-haired actress said about her work. But since she and I are staying at the same Tokyo hotel, perhaps we will get to bond over breakfast some morning.
