Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal, who last month adamantly denied rumors the festival will be moving to a late fall schedule that would follow the New York Film Festival, seemed to back off that position at Tribeca’s launch press conference on Tuesday. Asked about the move by a reporter, Rosenthal said, “I can’t categorically state what I’m having for lunch today,” then added, “I’ve been hearing the same rumor as you have. That’s all I can tell you.” That’s what we used to call a non-denial denial. The late spring date Tribeca staked out when it was founded in 2002 — following Sundance, Berlin and New Directors/New Films and just before Cannes — has always made it impossible to assemble a slate of first-class premieres.
