When MGM (temporarily) exited the movie distribution business a couple of years ago, Sony Pictures Classics gladly released a couple of pictures that MGM was planning to put out under the United Artists specialty label, “Capote” and “Art School Confidential.” But SPC took a pass on John Turturro’s offbeat musical “Romance & Cigarettes,” which premiered at the 2005 Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. The flick is available on DVD in much of the world, and you can find several tantalizing musical numbers on You Tube. Film Forum, which showed the flick at a fundraiser last year, will finally rescue it from limbo with an open-ended run beginning September 7. The stars include James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet and Christopher Walken.
