Van Johnson (1916-2008)
Here’s Van in the underrated “The Big Hangover,” with Elizabeth Taylor. When Woody Allen was looking for an old-time movie actor to play one in “The Purple Rose of Cairo,” he gave Johnson his last major screen role. Johnson gave probably his best performance in “The Caine Mutiny” opposite Bogie. He hosted a series of vintage MGM classics on WCBS-TV in the early ’80s; among many others, he starred in “A Guy Named Joe” opposite Spencer Tracy and Irene Dunne, simultaneously working opposite Dunne in “The White Cliffs of Dover” (both 1944).
