I was at a dinner last night with Bob Berney, head of Picturehouse, and his BW Jeanne Berney, who heads the press office at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, sponsors of the New York Film Festival. The dinner was in honor of “The Orphange,” a terrific new Spanish horror movie that Picturehouse, which scored big with “Pan’s Labyrinth,” hopes will follow in its footsteps. Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, “The Orphange,” like “Pan’s,” is produced by Guillermo del Toro, premiered in Cannes and will play in the New York Film Festival before opening at year’s end in Manhattan. In this chiller, a woman moves into a former orphange when she lived as a child; then her young son, who has a terminal illness, mysteriously disappears. Some reviewers are comparing it with “The Others,” but I think this is a much better, and far scarier, flick.
