Weekend box office
While you were busy watching UNC defeat Duke on the hard wood, how did it all shake out?
1. Watchmen $55.6 million
The non-superhero superhero movie pulled in quite a bit of dough, considering it was rated R, had an endless running time and featured no marquee stars (sorry, Malin Akerman). Still, it fell far short of the $75 million some were predicting. Now let’s see how this one holds up next weekend…
2. Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail $8.8 million
The performance of this low-budget comedy has won Tyler Perry the right to stick “Tyler Perry” in front of the title of his next six movies.
3. Taken $7.45 million
This low-budget thriller has been so hugely and unexpectedly successful, does anyone think Fox can resist trying to spin a franchise out of it? Would you like to watch a series of films in which Liam Neeson makes threatening phone calls to bad guys? I think I kind of might.
4. Slumdog Millionaire $6.9 million
Riding the wave of Hugh Jackman’s many pointless musical montages at this year’s Oscars, Slumdog continues to clean up.
5. Paul Blart: Mall Cop $4.2 million
That number means that approximately 420,000 people woke up this weekend and realized that they hadn’t yet seen Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
