It takes a movie obsessive, however, to suss out the Elvis connection in the John Cena action flick “12 Rounds.” Cena plays a security guard named Danny Fisher — which happened to remember is the same name of the King’s character in arguably his best movie, Michael Curtiz’ “King Creole.” Scanning a review on an Australia website — Fox didn’t screen this for North American critics — I see no similarities to the plot of Elvis’ flick, which was based on a Harold Robbins bestseller titled “A Stone for Danny Fisher.” Both movies do share a setting of New Orleans, so I can’t believe the name was accidental. Red West, who appeared in many of Elvis’ flicks, was apparently not in “King Creole,” by the way. Per the IMDB, he made his film debut the following year at Fox, playing the dual roles of an Edinburgh student and a beared man with a newspaper in Henry Levin’s delightful “Journey to the Center of the Earth” with Pat Boone and James Mason. Love to see that one on Blu-ray.
