This week, the world has been collectively freaking out about a new Netflix romantic-comedy called “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.”

You might have seen Twitter posts about it such as “so uh can we just talk about to all the boys ive loved before please,” (which currently has over 3,300 likes). A simple tweet with images from the movie has over 200,000 likes.

What is this movie, and why does it have the world abuzz?

“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” is based on a 2014 novel of the same name by Jenny Han, and it follows Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor), a shy high schooler who — thanks to a complex series of events — has to pretend to date popular boy Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo). The ensuing story is a typical rom-com, full of tropes (fake dating, misunderstandings) and nods to classics like “Sixteen Candles.” It’s also got an Asian-American female lead, which is rare for the genre.

But the real reason it’s striking a nerve is the movie’s male lead.

In the age of #TimesUp and #MeToo, we’ve heard countless stories of seemingly upstanding men revealing themselves to be predators. Social movements like incel culture, Gamergate and the fall in public opinion of figures like Elon Musk have also poked holes in the pervasive cultural assumption that nerdy guys are the nice ones.

Enter Peter Kavinsky. The film’s male lead is almost shockingly wholesome. He’s attentive without being pushy, he’s earnest and he doesn’t brag about sexual exploits. And most importantly, he’s not a bad boy or a nerd — he’s a sensitive jock who wears his heart on his sleeve.

“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” is a cute but ordinary rom-com — but in our current era, Peter Kavinsky seems like an extraordinary kind of man. He came along at exactly the right time, and the world is responding. Expect to start seeing more male leads in Peter’s mold.
