So that’s why Han Solo was the one picking up all the ladies.
Days after JJ Abrams, director of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” admitted that there are plans to include gay characters in future chapters of the iconic sci-fi series, Mark Hamill revealed that there may already be one.
“Fans are writing and asking all these questions: ‘I’m bullied in school . . . I’m afraid to come out,'” Hamill told The Sun. “They say to me: ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
Finn (John Boyega, left) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”Lucasfilm Ltd.“To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility,” Abrams continued in his interview with The Daily Beast. “So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in the world.”
The reboot, which broke box-office records last year, has already been celebrated for breaking free from Hollywood norms by featuring a female lead character and a black supporting actor.
“When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters,” Abrams said. “It’s about inclusivity. So of course.”
One popular fan theory includes a blossoming romance between former Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) and ace Resistance fighter pilot Poe (Oscar Isaac).
Boyega told Radio Times that, as far as he knows, it’s certainly possible.
“As far as I’m concerned, when JJ sat us down to go through the script, it was a bromance,” he said. “But now I’m learning what Mark Hamill said before, when he didn’t know that Darth Vader was Luke’s father: you never know what they’re going to pull. I’m looking at the director Rian [Johnson] closely so he can get me involved early, so I can prepare myself. So who knows?”
