Young Fidel on Screen
Ailing dictator Fidel Castro, retiring after 49 years at the helm of Cuba, apparently will be turning up on U.S. movie screens later this year. Mexican actor Damian Bichir (pictured) plays a young Castro in a pair of flicks from Steven Soderbergh that focus on Che Guevara, played by Benecio del Toro. According to the IMDB, “The Argentine” is set in 1956 Cuba and “Guerilla” takes place mostly in 1964 New York City. Bichir supposedly got the part when Javier Bardem backed out of the projects and the IMDB does not list U.S. distributors for either film. Fidel and Che were previously portrayed by Jack Palance and Omar Sharif in Richard Fleisher’s notorious “Che!” (1969).
