It’s been a cruel summer for music couples. First it was Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert calling it quits; now Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale have decided to end their 13-year marriage.

Rumors of a rocky union have followed them for some time, but the biggest clue may have gone unnoticed. In 2014, Stefani teased her still-unreleased third album with the track “Baby Don’t Lie,” a less-than-impressive reggae-pop song (produced by Ryan Tedder and Benny Blanco) that promptly flopped. As a result, few people outside of the 45-year-old Stefani’s hard-core fan base ever heard it.

But in retrospect, a closer listen to the song shows that Stefani can be heard voicing relationship insecurities. “We’ve been walking down this road some time,” she sings. “But there’s something behind those eyes, those eyes/That you can’t, that you can’t disguise.”

At the time of release, Stefani explained to Ryan Seacrest that parts of it were autobiographical — and that in writing it, she was also “pulling from the past.”

Sadly for these two rockers, the past may have returned to haunt them.
