The return to Shaolin.
Lyricist and producer RZA said he wanted to buy back a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang album he sold to disgraced Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli — but the rapper’s lawyer said it could not be done.
“When [Shkreli] put it on eBay, the first thing I did was call my lawyer, and I was like, ‘Yo, let’s go,'” RZA told Rolling Stone about when Shkreli posted the $2 million album on Ebay.
“And they said, ‘All right, check with your contract.’ And it’s no, you can’t do it. Ain’t that a bitch?”
The bids reached $1 million, but it never sold.
The double LP, “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin,” was sold to Shkreli in 2015 and is believed to be only copy in existence.
“The record has become an entity, very different from a lot of albums. It’s like the Mona Lisa. It’s got its own folklore,” RZA told the magazine.
After Shkreli was found guilty of securities fraud, a judge decided he had to forfeit $7.4 million of his assets — including the album.
It’s not clear where “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” will end up, or who has possession of it.
