Leave it to the Social Justice Warriors to go back in time to try to ruin things loved by a generation — in this case, the Spice Girls.

The target is Scary Spice — a k a Melanie Brown, the group’s only black member. The good folks over at Heat Street have noted a drumbeat of tweets flagging racism in the name. For example:

@richardllie: “Whoa. Hold up. I know I’m a little late with this question, but is it racist that Scary Spice was black?”

@sven8nine: “Looking back now naming the black spice girl scary spice was kinda racist.”

@auspices: “in retrospect, nicknaming the only black member of the spice girls ‘scary’ was a bit racist wasn’t it?”

Well, let’s find out from the lady herself.

“I’m still Scary Spice,” Brown, also known as Mel B, said. “It was because I was very opinionated and people perceive that as being a bit scary. But these days, women who have opinions speak up — they know what they want.”

The members got their nicknames back in 1996 from Tops of the Pops magazine. Its then-editor, Peter Lorraine, recently recalled, “We laughed the most when we came up with Scary . . . Mel B was so loud and had tried to take over our whole photo shoot.”

Phew: Twenty years after the release of the band’s first hit single, “Wannabe,” it’s still not racist to believe in Girl Power.
