After seven years, the wait for a new Strokes album is nearly over.

At a New Year’s Eve show at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the New York rock group debuted a brand new track, “Ode to the Mets,” which will appear on a forthcoming record. Frontman Julian Casablancas told a packed stadium: “We’ve been unfrozen and we’re back.”

“Yeah, we’ve got a new album coming out soon. 2020, here we come,” said Casablancas. “The 2010s, whatever the f–k they’re called, we took ‘em off.”

Alongside bandmates Nikolai Fraiture, Albert Hammond Jr., Fabrizio Moretti and Nick Valensi, the “Last Nite” singer continued, “If you really love someone, you’ll be frozen with them. You know what? I don’t know what I say generally, and I ramble a lot, but I love you guys, and it’s a real honor to share the stage and this night with you guys.”

Fellow New York indie rocker Mac DeMarco, who opened for the band, joined them during the song “Modern Girls & Old Fashion Men,” which hasn’t been performed since the track first appeared on the B-side of their 2004 single “Reptilia.”

Last year, The Strokes premiered a new song, “The Adults Are Talking,” during a concert in Los Angeles. Prior to 2019’s new song and the four-track EP “Future Present Past” in 2016, the band hasn’t released a full-length album since “Comedown Machine” in 2013. Casablancas managed to stay busy throughout the 2010s, though, performing and recording with his other band, The Voidz.

Despite a lack of new music to promote, The Strokes played dozens of shows between records, including an ill-fated performance at this past summer’s Governor’s Ball, which was canceled due to severe weather conditions.
