RICKY Gervais, who won worldwide acclaim – and two Golden Globes – for his workplace satire “The Office,” has found his next character.
Gervais describes his new show, still in the planning stages, as “a satire of political thinkers and people who try to make a difference.”
The time is ripe, Gervais says, for a political comedy about people who rant about world affairs – but largely have no idea what they’re talking about.
The show would poke fun at “comedians who think they are really sticking it to politicians, or rock stars ‘getting involved’ ” in various causes, he says.
Gervais says he has not signed up with any network yet- but it is expected that when the new series is ready, a major bidding war will break out over the rights to air his follow-up to “The Office.”
In “The Office,” Gervais plays David Brent, the smarmy “boss- from-hell” manager of a paper company in a dreary British industrial town.
The show aired for two seasons in Britain and set sales records when it was released on DVD.
It has aired in the U.S. since last year on cable channel BBC America, where it has found a small but very influential audience.
NBC is working on an American version of the series for next season.
Gervais guest-starred on Sunday night’s episode of “Alias” on ABC.
