OLYMPIC GAMES UP FOR GRABS
NBC is in danger of losing its stranglehold on the Olympics for the first time since the mid-’90s.
Fox and ESPN will make serious runs at the 2014 and 2016 games when bidding starts within the next year, according to insiders at both networks.
And, if one of them is successful in outbidding NBC, it would transform the way we’ve watched Olympics since Bill Clinton was in the White House.
“It will be interesting to see how it plays out,” says industry analyst Brad Adgate of Horizon Media. “Fox was very aggressive in getting the NFL away from CBS early on and I think the Olympics is one component they’d like to add.
“And ESPN is interesting because they’re cable. They have two revenue streams, subscription fees from advertisers and ad rates from sponsors.
“And some of the best brands launched in the past 25 years . . . have been on cable.”
Despite declining ratings, the Olympics is still a huge TV draw. NBC is expected to reap over $1 billion in profits for the upcoming games in Beijing.
But the 2014 Winter games in Sochi, Russia and the 2016 Summer games are up for grabs. And with Chicago in the running for 2016, that could drive the price up even more, Adgate says.
