ON THE ROAD TO NOWHERE
CUBA FELIZ
No “Buena Vista Social Club.”
Running time: 93 minutes. Not rated (nothing offensive). In Spanish with English subtitles. At the Film Forum, Houston Street, west of Sixth Avenue.
‘CUBA Feliz,” billed by filmmaker Karim Dridi as a “musical road movie,” is actually more of a rambling performance film, focusing on a 76-year-old musical legend and 14 other Cuban musicians.
It suffers by comparison to Wim Wenders’ vastly superior “Buena Vista Social Club,” which placed its Cuban musicians in a social context through interviews and narration.
Working on a much more modest scale (and with a two-person crew), Frenchman Dridi has put together a quasi-documentary collection of musical numbers, delivered mostly by the venerable Miguel Del Morales – known as El Gallo (the rooster) – as he travels the country at the behest of the filmmaker.
A wide variety of musical styles – from jazz to salsa to rap – is heard.
But while the performances are often engaging, this loose collection of largely improvised numbers would probably have worked better as a one-hour TV documentary.
