Photographer Robert Freeman, who shot numerous iconic album cover images for The Beatles, died on Friday at the age of 82.

The band’s official website announced Freeman’s death without giving a cause.

Freeman photographed the covers of five albums for the Fab Four.

One of Freeman’s photos, which is arguably his most notable one for the band, appeared on two album covers — “With The Beatles” and “Meet The Beatles!”

The black and white picture shows the faces of the four band members in part-shadow.

Paul McCartney, in an online post, recalled how many people assumed the image was staged.

“People often think that the cover shot for ‘Meet The Beatles’ of our foreheads in half shadow was a carefully arranged studio shot,” McCartney said.

But in reality, he said, “it was taken quite quickly by Robert in the corridor of a hotel we were staying in where natural light came from the windows at the end of the corridor.”
