TENOR James Valenti, fresh off his Met Opera debut last month in “La Traviata,” is the latest winner of one of opera’s most prestigious awards.

The Richard Tucker Music Foundation announced today that the 32-year-old New Jersey native snagged the $30,000 award annually given to an American singer poised to take over the international opera circuit. He joins a prestigious list of past recipients including Renee Fleming, Deborah Voigt, David Daniels and Stephanie Blythe.

“I am so surprised, elated and completely humbled,” Valenti said. “It certainly has been quite a month … and to be recognized in this fashion is the cherry on top of a very big sundae.”

Catch the award-winning tenor in “La Traviata” at the Met through April 24.

Come July, Valenti is taking his role as Alfredo abroad making his debut at the Royal Opera in London.
