If it’s been way too long since you’ve had rabbit schnitzel while listening to Rufus Wainwright sing about a teenage crush, then have I got a show for you. Really.
It’s called “Dinner With the Band,” and it’s unlike other annoying cooking hipsters shows of this type. (“Dinner and a Movie” unfortunately comes to mind. If you remember that was a dreadful show with two hipsters who’d break into the middle of a movie to cook pork chops.)
Here, though, we have hipster chef Sam Mason who cooks with musicians. They then interrupt the cooking to play music. Much better idea.
Sam has the qualifications of true hipster-ness: One, his name is Sam. Two, he has many tattoos. Three, He’s a “rock-n-roll” chef. Four, and most importantly, he lives in a cool loft on a broken down block in Brooklyn.
On the show, Sam invites his favorite musicians over to cook, eat and play. First, he teaches them to cook something they love. They, in turn, play music upstairs for other hipsters who stand around with tattoos and boots in his loft.
Then, Sam eats with the band and then they play music.
Oh, so what does this have to do with rabbit schnitzel?
It happens to be Rufus Wainwright’s personal favorite dish when he and his boyfriend ski in the Alps. Like I said, hipster central.
On episode two, there’s a much more down-to-earth group, The Devil Makes Three, who play a combo of ragtime, rockabilly, and folk that’s just superb. They also cook and eat red-brined chicken.
Call me plebeian, but give me a red chicken over Bugs Bunny schnitzel any day.
Weird, good fun.
