‘Queen of the Sun” is a beautiful nature film, with gorgeous, multicolored shots of bees and flowers. It also is a well-made documentary about the troubles of the honeybee.

There has been a major drop in honeybee populations around the world. That doesn’t just mean that fewer people will be stung — it means big trouble for our agricultural system. That’s because 40 percent of American food production involves pollination.

And what is the cause of the loss of so many bees, a phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder? According to the director, Taggart Siegel, and the experts he interviews (including one appropriately named Pollan), the fault lies with corporate agribusiness and its policy of monocropping — planting the same crop over many acres for many years.

Bees apparently don’t like that arrangement, creating a serious problem worth pondering.
