I WANT TO LIVE! (1958)
Sunday, 8 a.m., TCM
Susan Hayward won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Barbara Graham, a big ole floozy tramp who is wrongly convicted of murder and is sentenced to death. The great, campy dialogue that will live in infamy includes lines like this, as in the scene where Graham is led to the gas chamber: “Just this once, I wish it wasn’t ladies first.”
THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (2001)
Sunday, 2 p.m, WPIX
A family of former child prodigies (Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson), who are all now completely dysfunctional, reunite at the old family manse after discovering that their absent father (Gene Hackman), long divorced from their mother (Anjelica Huston), is suffering from cancer. Sort of. If you love offbeat, odd, actorish movies, this one’s for you! Nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar.
FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY (2005)
Tuesday, 1 p.m., WLNY
A crazy good cast (Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson), and a crew of top notch directors, (Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino) got together to tell four tales from Miller’s graphic novel about a violent and corrupt city. Think retribution, revenge and renegades. Favorite line: “Modern cars — they all look like electric shavers.”
MURDER BY DEATH (1976)
Thursday, 12 a.m., TCM
Neil Simon’s hilarious spoof of great literary detectives is this tale of a bazillionaire recluse (Truman Capote) who invites the world’s greatest detectives ( Peter Falk, Peter Sellers, Eileen Brennan, James Coco, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, Maggie Smith) to his secluded mansion to solve a mystery. Laugh out loud while trying to figure it out yourself.
