Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, who had hits in the 1970s with “Stuck in the Middle with You” and “Baker Street,” died Tuesday morning after a long battle with an unspecified illness, The Guardian reported.
Rafferty’s family said he died at home with his daughter Martha at his side.
Rafferty battled alcohol abuse for several years, and was hospitalized for liver problems related to his drinking in 2008, according to The Scotsman newspaper.
He performed in a folk band with actor Billy Connolly before co-founding the group Stealer’s Wheel, which recorded “Stuck in the Middle with You” in 1972.
“Stuck in the Middle with You” got a second life in 1992 when director Quentin Tarantino used the song to score the torturing of a police officer by Michael Madsen’s character in his directorial debut “Reservoir Dogs.”
Rafferty’s 1978 solo hit “Baker Street” has been covered by the rock band Foo Fighters, country singer Waylon Jennings, and several other artists.
