STARR REPORT
Taking the fifth
And they said it would never last . . .
Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer are celebrating their fifth (!) year co-hosting “Good Morning America.” That’s about 4 years longer than any one thought they would actu ally remain on the ABC morn ing show when they stepped in to replace Lisa McRee and Kevin Newman.
Since then, the Gibson- Sawyer team, along with weath erman Tony Perk ins and oth ers, has helped “GMA” in crease its total viewership 37 percent – and has helped close the gap with first-place “Today” to 1.3 million viewers (compared to the 2.6 million difference dur ing the McRee-Newman era).
Meanwhile, CBS’ “The Early Show” notched 3.4 million viewers last week – its best showing since launching the four-host format (Rene Syler, Harry Smith, Hannah Storm, Julie Chen) in Oct. ’02.
Daniel Sunjata’s appearance as a Fleet Week sailor on the fifth-season opener of “Sex and the City” has sent his ca reer into overdrive. Not only did Sunjata appear all over the TV landscape after that episode aired, but he nabbed a role on Broadway in “Take Me Out” and is now shooting a big-screen feature, “Noel,” opposite Susan Sarandon.
Meanwhile, New York singer/writer/actress/ pro ducer Sharon Stan and her partner – noted jazz pianist Hal Hance – are off to Ar gentina to promote their movie, “Daddy Domino,” which boasts a soundtrack from Manhattan Transfer. The movie is based on the true story of a gay con man from Romania and a young woman from Alabama.
