THE STARR REPORT
NBC’s non-coverage a ‘Titanic’ misstep?
NBC is sticking to its guns over thedecision not to go live Sunday night with Florida’s certification of George W. Bush as the winner of that state, or to air Bush’s first live remarks shortly thereafter.
NBC opted not to interrupt its screening of “Titanic,” while sister cable network MSNBC covered the proceedings in their entirety.
“NBC updated throughout the movie and throughout the night,” says an NBC News spokeswoman. “We had break-ins for Secretary of State Katherine Harris, for Sen. Joseph Lieberman and for George W. Bush while keeping the movie intact.
“We broke in live for markets that weren’t showing the movie,” she said. “And we swiftly turned around two special reports.”
Cybill faulty as ‘Mars’ attacks low #s
This hasn’t been a good week for Cybill Shepherd.
First, Shepherd was forced to flee her Memphis mansion last Saturday when a fire broke out. No one was injured in the blaze.
And the latest syndicated ratings show that the Shepherd-hosted “Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus” was dead-last among all talk shows (week of Nov. 6), averaging a paltry 0.8 (roughly 800,000 households). The news is even worse in the coveted demo of women 25-54, where “Men” is averaging only 500,000 households.
It’s ‘Roger & Me,’ says ‘Scorpion’ Lintel
Producer Roger Corman and “Black Scorpion” star Michelle Lintel have met to discuss Lintel’s doing 22 more one-hour segments of “Black Scorpion,” debuting Jan. 5 on SCI FI. That depends, of course, on whether SCI FI ends up renewing the show for a second go-round.
Corman bankrolled the entire 22-episode run of “Black Scorpion.”
You too can see U2 in new concert
Rockers U2 are scheduled to play a free concert for 1,000 people at Irving Plaza on Dec. 5. The concert will air live on radio stations nationwide. Nothing is confirmed, but insiders say it will most likely air on K-Rock (92.3 FM) here in New York.
Universal Records promo exec Steve Leeds says that tickets will be given out by K-Rock. The concert is in support of U2’s new CD, “All That You Can’t Leave Behind.”
