DETROIT — The White Stripes rock duo of Jack White and his ex-wife Meg White announced Wednesday they were ending their musical collaboration after 14 years together.

The “band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live,” a statement on the band’s website said.

“It is for a myriad of reasons but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band,” the statement said, adding that the cause was not due to artistic differences or health issues. The group had to cancel 18 tour dates in 2007 because Meg White was suffering from acute anxiety.

The Grammy Award-winning duo has released six studio albums with hit singles that include “Seven Nation Army,” “Icky Thump,” and “Fell in Love with a Girl.”

The indie garage rock bandmates were unusually coy about the status of their relationship and initially claimed to be siblings. They were found to have been married, though, in 1996 and divorced in March 2000.

Jack White married British model Karen Elson in 2005. Meg White was the maid of honor at the wedding. The couple live in Nashville and have two children together.

In 2009, Meg White married guitarist Jackson Smith in a ceremony held in Jack White’s backyard.
