Last night the New York Drama Critics Circle voted for its 2011 awards and citations. I have to admit, I went with some trepidation as I dreaded a repeat of last year’s deadlock – there was no award for best musical because neither of the top two contenders, “The Scottsboro Boys” and “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” reached the necessary majority.

Luckily my fears proved unfounded. I can’t say I’m thrilled by all the results but hey, that’s the way majority rule works. You can find the breakdown of the votes here. As you can see, my No. 1 picks for Best Drama and Best Musical — “Good People” and “The Book of Mormon” – won so no complaint here.

It’s been a particularly great season for dramas, and choosing just one was difficult. Lynn Nottage’s “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark,” was a late-coming entry but it’s such a good play in such a good production that I put it at No. 2 on my ballot. My No. 3 pick was also a Second Stage show, “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity.”

I can’t say I was as excited about “Jerusalem” as many of my colleagues. In retrospect, my review was overly lenient: It’s one of those shows that shrunk on me as time went by. All I can remember now are the things that annoy me about it, as they tend to supersede the positive elements.

I was also less thrilled about the special award to the revival of “The Normal Heart.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s a terrific production, but I felt we were rewarding Broadway for it’s meant to do there. Personally, I would have preferred honoring “Sleep No More” but unfortunately we didn’t reach a quorum on that one.

But by all measures it’s been an embarrassment of riches this season, particularly in the spring. If only we could have this problem every year.
