I enjoyed the revival of David Mamet’s “A Life in the Theatre” well enough, but it was playing at only 76% capacity last week, and it’d probably be a lot worse without stars Patrick Stewart and T.R. Knight. The show is a limited engagement, with a Jan. 2 closing date, but I couldn’t help wondering who could replace those stars if they decided to bail earlier or if the show was miraculously extended. Enter rotisserie stunt casting!

F. Murray Abraham could easily step in the role of Robert, the older actor currently played by Stewart, but which young pup could play John? Clearly stunt casting requires screen people, so maybe Ashton Kutcher or Josh Duhamel. More intriguing would be a gender-neutral cast (unless Mamet objects, just like Beckett didn’t want women to do “Waiting for Godot”). I personally would like to see Meryl Streep and Amy Adams as the ham and the long-suffering sidekick. Wait a minute, that’s “Julie & Julia”!
