In my review of “Bonnie & Clyde,” I write that Frank Wildhorn is the most successful contemporary Broadway composer. We’re talking about quantity here, but even then, some of you may find it hard to believe: This guy opened more new shows on Broadway in the past 15 years than Stephen Sondheim or Andrew Lloyd Webber? He sure did!

Compare and contrast. “Bonnie & Clyde” is Wildhorn’s sixth new Broadway score in 14 years. In the same timespan, Lloyd Webber opened four new shows here. Sondheim has had three in 17 years, including “Assassins” and “The Frogs.” (Sondheim’s been linked to several new productions, but they’ve been concerts or revues of this older songs, not new scores.) Elton John has had four new shows in 14 years.

Considering that getting a new musical on Broadway is no small feat, Wildhorn’s sextet is a genuine achievement. You may bicker about the musicals’ artistic worth, but that they opened at all can’t be casually dismissed.
