Being a young playwright ain’t easy. At least Bekah Brunstetter is getting commissions and productions, which is more than most of her peers. Her plays have been somewhat under the radar so far, which is fitting for a writer who doesn’t do big, demonstrative work, and who avoids attention-getting ploys like multimedia whatever and provocative topics. I had quite liked her “Oohrah!” at Atlantic 2 about a year and a half ago, and her latest, “Be a Good Little Widow” — which opened last night at Ars Nova — confirms her talent.
Brunstetter was supposed to have another play, “A Long and Happy Life,” produced by Naked Angels this summer, but funding has fallen through and the show has been postponed to a date TBD. (A similar same thing happened, on a larger scale, to Neil LaBute’s Broadway production of “Fat Pig,” if you recall, and that show dropped out of the spring season.)
In the meantime, you can test the prolific Brunstetter’s newest offering as part of Primary Stages’ free Fresh Ink Reading Series: It’s called “Little Man” and it’s on June 1 at 5pm.
