First of all: Sometime after 4pm I will discuss the Tony nominations and the New York Drama Critics Circle awards on “All Things Considered.” You can listen on WNYC (93.9 FM and AM 820) in New York, or on your local NPR affiliate, or on the web.

Yesterday the Drama Critics Circle voted for its annual awards. As expected, Lynn Nottage’s “Ruined” won in a landslide. If you look at the vote breakdown, you’ll see that I was one of two critics to vote for Gina Gionfriddo’s “Becky Shaw.” It’s not that I disliked “Ruined” — on the contrary, I found it a good, moving play. But I still think the ending completely undermines everything that precedes. Because I don’t vote on intentions, no matter how good they are, I went for “Becky Shaw,” which to me is completely coherent from beginning to end and offers several thoughtful layers under a fluffier exterior.

Then this morning the Tony nominations were announced. I have some quibbles (Carla Gugino? Carey Mulligan? Dianne Wiest?) and one big issue: I am flabbergasted “9 to 5” didn’t make the cut as in the Best Musical category — but “Rock of Ages” did. I mean, What the …?!? I would even have preferred “[title of show]” to “RoA.”

By the way, though I’m happy it was nominated, I’m expecting a new volley of insults from fans of “Next to Normal,” who have been rabid in attacking me for not enjoying the show more. My main problem with “NtN” is the same one I have with “Ruined”: It’s ambitious — for which it must be commanded — but ultimately it lacks the courage of its convictions. (Though “Ruined” gets much, much closer to the goal.) The show just lost me when someone sang wistfully “I wish I could fly …” Argghhhh! What I want is coherence within a stated goal.
