In today’s paper I reviewed the new play “Dusk Rings a Bell,” which stars Paul Sparks and Kate Walsh. The latter is best known for playing Dr. Addison Montgomery in “Grey’s Anatomy” then its spin-off, “Private Practice.” Which brings me to the enduring pleasures of spotting theater actors in big TV series.

Everybody knows that “Law & Order” and now “The Good Wife” are havens for theater folks, but they’re guest stars on these shows, which shoot here in NY. “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice,” on the other hand, are filmed in LA so NY stage pros can’t easily do a quickie guest spot — but they’re in the regular casts. (As they are in “Glee,” where the TV-Broadway connection is completely organic.)

Walsh actually wasn’t one of those local theater regulars (though she did stage work in Chicago and some improv here) so it was particularly fun to see her be so good in “Dusk Rings a Bell.” But Chandra Wilson, Sara Ramirez, Sandra Oh, Taye Diggs and Audra McDonald all have NY cred, and several Tonys to boot. The downside is that we don’t actually see them do theater all that regularly anymore. Wilson played Mama Morton in “Chicago” last summer, McDonald comes in for limited runs, but Oh and Ramirez have been MIA for years. Come on, what is the summer hiatus for?!?

Perhaps they need to leave the show for good, as T.R. Knight did last year. After that he did “Parade” in LA, and next week he’s co-starring in Neil LaBute’s “Filthy Talk for Troubled Times,” an MCC benefit on June 3-5.

And to finish the week on a campy note, check out this clip in which Walsh, Wilson and Ramirez chat with Oprah: It’s like drag queens having a coffee klatch!
