Laurie Anderson is raising an interesting issue these days: Who should review her shows? I wrote about her latest, “Delusion” from a theater perspective (see here), while Allan Kozinn, who covers mostly classical music, did it for the New York Times. There is quite a lot of music in the piece, but the overall emphasis is so much on spoken storytelling that “Delusion” certainly qualifies as a theatrical event. Too bad it’s such a tedious one. I just find it hard to believe that after decades in the trenches, and with her obvious technical skills, Anderson still uses the same tricks. Doesn’t her voice-modifying thingie have any setting other than “baritone dude”?
What hasn’t changed either is Anderson’s physical appearance: At 63, she looks amazingly ageless. I wonder if there’s a decaying picture hidden in this Dorian Gray’s downtown loft. Wait a minute, there is: It’s Anderson’s husband, Lou Reed.
