The nominations for the 2011 Lucille Lortel Awards have just been announced and it’s a nice vintage. And no, I’m not saying that just because I was a member of the voting committee that hashed out the noms in a conference room this very morning: Seriously, it was a pretty good season off Broadway.
I don’t have any major issues with the list, even if, of course, some of my favorites didn’t make the cut — that’s just the way it goes when you only have five slots in each category. Despite my fervent lobbying, for instance, neither Ivo van Hove (“The Little Foxes”) nor Edwin Torres (“The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity”) was nominated for direction. On a more positive side, I was happy to see the acknowledgement of several comic performances — their being overlooked at awards time is one of my pet peeves. It was particularly gratifying to see Christian Borle nominated for his hilarious turn in “Peter and the Starcatcher” rather than his dramatic one in “Angels in America.”
Now there’s more voting to do. No matter the results, I’ll be a happy camper.
The awards will be handed out on May 1, and tickets can be purchased online or by calling 212-352-3101.
