Bruce Norris’ “Clybourne Park” has just been awarded the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play — which uses “A Raisin in the Sun” as a starting point — opened at Playwrights Horizons in February of last year, and got very good reviews, including mine. I thought the show’s first half, propelled by a cast “firing on all cylinders,” was “absolutely sensational.” Things got “more formulaic” in the second act but still, this was a memorable production for a memorable play.
There’s also two finalists: Lisa D’Amour’s “Detroit” (due on Broadway this fall) and — wait for this! — John Guare’s nutty “A Free Man of Color.” That last one’s a shocker, I have to say. Do they reward Best Intentions at the Pulitzer?
