To the surprise of practically nobody, “SPIDER-MAN Turn Off the Dark” (yes, this is the official spelling) has run into another delay. The opening has just been postponed from January 11 to February 7 “due to some unforeseeable setbacks, most notably the injury of a principal cast member.” Read: so the creative team can rewrite the ending, which is reportedly prompting episodes of narcolepsy on W. 42nd St. I for one am looking forward to see the show.

I’m also wondering if Spidey is breaking a record for most previews ever. I don’t mind previews per se, of course — just the practice of charging full price for a work in progress. Checking out the show as it’s being worked on then posting on All That Chat may amuse the hardcore contingent, but I doubt the majority of tourists — who bought 63% of Broadway tickets in 2009-2010 — pay any attention to backstage shenanigans. All they know is that they paid $130 for something that’s not ready. Does anybody ever buy a new car with only half the upholstery installed and then hear it just wasn’t quite finished but hey, you don’t mind, right?
