A lot of attention is paid to details in ‘The Diary of a Madman,’ which I reviewed today. There’s Geoffrey Rush’s performance, of course, but he’s not just plopped down there for our benefit: Neil Armfield’s production is unusually gorgeous. And yet something in the program, of all places, really bugged me.

I like getting to my seat with enough time left to check out the playbill before a show starts. And so I did at BAM on Wednesday evening. It’s rare to have photos from the very show you’re about to see in the program, but the one for “The Diary of a Madman” goes beyond that: It includes four of them, two of which I’d consider spoilers.

Now, considering the play’s title, it’s no surprise that Rush’s character is not all there mentally. But there’s a definitely evolution over the course of the evening, and said photos reveal way too much about the show’s ending. As a result, I found myself waiting for a certain change in the character’s appearance — in fact, I actively tried to see how it would happen during blackouts. I’d rather have been surprised.

Sometimes, we just don’t need to be that well prepared.
