I am simultaneously surprised, disappointed and perversely pleased to see that apart from my own rave, the reviews of “Stunning” so far are mixed to negative. I guess critics want new voices only as long as they sound like the old voices.

Fine, I’m sure I’ll have to opportunity to go back to this topic again. And again and again.

In addition to its artistic merits, “Stunning” is a cheap ticket. Many people complain that theater is too expensive, and a lot of time it is, but this excuse doesn’t always hold water. So here’s three recommendations of shows you can see this weekend for under $30.

First, there’s the aforementioned “Stunning,” which is at the Duke on 42nd St and costs only $20, which has got to be the cheapest thing you can get on the Deuce nowadays.

Next, head downtown to catch “Machines Machines Machines Machines Machines Machines Machines” at HERE, for $28. It’s a wonderfully inventive, goofy show, and you can even bring kids.

Finally, the Public Theater is going broke so you won’t have to: The lab run of Suzan-Lori Parks’ work-in-progress “Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1 & 8)” can be seen for just $10. That’s less than a cocktail at Joe’s Pub next door! Admittedly I haven’t seen this show yet but c’mon: It’s Suzan-Lori Parks starring Suzan-Lori Parks and directed by Jo Bonney for $10.
