THE makers of the upcoming “Austin Powers in Goldmember” were forced to yank the movie’s posters, Web site, trailers – and title – after a complaint on behalf of rival spy James Bond.

The Motion Picture Association of America ordered New Line Cinema to take the highly unusual action after MGM complained that the title of the Mike Myers spoof infringed on the Bond classic “Goldfinger.”

The dispute apparently does not involve the plot of the sequel, in which Mike Myers returns as the dimwitted ’60s spy, battling a new villain named Goldmember (also played by Myers), falling in love with Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles) and arguing with Powers’ father (Michael Caine).

New Line said the studio expected to win an appeal of the MPAA ruling well before the movie’s scheduled July 26 release.

In 1997, MGM and UA tried unsuccessfully to stop New Line from using the title “The Spy Who Shagged Me.”
