10 years, 10 films
Hard to believe that the 21st century is already 10 years old. Looking back on those historic years, I came up with this list of my favorite films of the decade. Let’s go!
10. “Talk to Her” (2002): Pedro Almodovar at his most mature.
9. “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” (2005): Cristi Puiu’s tear-jerker about an old man’s final hours, via the Romanian New Wave.
8. “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” (2007): Another Romanian winner, this one about a woman’s abortion nightmare in Communist Bucharest.
7. “Let the Right One In” (2008): The stylish and oh-so-dark tale, by Swedish director Tomas Alfredson, of a teen boy who discovers the girl next door is a vampire.
6. “In the City of Sylvia” (2007): Follow that woman! Minimalist romancer by José Luis Guerin transfers “Last Year at Marienbad” to the streets of Spain.
5. “Werkmeister Harmonies” (2000): A 145- minute fable by Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr.
4. “Mulholland Dr.” (2001): A bizarre noir by David Lynch.
3. “Lilya 4-ever” (2002): Swedish writer-director Lukas Moodysson’s disturbing portrait of a 17-year-old girl forced into sex slavery.
2. “Oldboy” (2003): From masterful South Korean Park Chan-wook: A businessman is kidnapped and held in a hotel room for 15 years — watching TV and eating dumplings. Now he’s free and looking for revenge.
1. “In the Mood for Love” (2000): Illicit romance in Hong Kong, courtesy of Wong Kar-wai, featuring Asian superstars Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Unforgettable.
