4 QUESTIONS FOR KAITY TONG
Perhaps the camera likes anchor woman Kaity Tong too much.
After 10 years at Ch. 7’s “Eyewitness News” and nine at WPIX/Ch. 11’s “News at Ten, she is one of those people who seem to exist only on TV. (Hard to imagine bumping into her at the deli-counter. )
Just one of three New York newsies nominated for two local Emmys last week, she was one of the first Asian faces New Yorkers saw sitting in an anchor chair.
Who are your heroes?
My parents. They came to the states from China years ago with two babies, spoke no English and had no money.
My brother is an architect [now] and I’ve done okay.
Are there any books or movies that have changed your life?
I love to read so it’s hard to nail it down, but if I had to, I’d say that books like “Woman Warrior” by Maxine Hong Kingston, “The Joy Luck Club” and all the other Amy Tan books and “Eating Chinese Food Naked,” by Mei Ng.
These books really had an impact on me because I realized that I was not alone.
What was your worst day of life?
The day I realized that I could no longer eat two quarter-pounders with cheese and fries whenever I felt like it and not gain any weight
What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this?
I set out to be a teacher. I was in a doctoral program at Stanford University because I wanted to teach at a college level.
I never finished but I got my M.A. in Chinese and Japanese literature.
Or, frankly I could have been a very good real estate agent. I seriously love to see the inside of other people’s apartments.
