HILARY Helstein’s documentary “As Seen Through These Eyes” tells a little-known aspect of the Holocaust: death-camp

prisoners who, in the words of the narrator, poet Maya Angelou, “held on to their sanity through artistic activities.”

These activities included watercolor paintings and charcoal sketches of life inside the prisons. Some of the work is surprisingly professional, especially in light of the conditions under which they were done.

Unfortunately, Angelou’s detached and often superfluous narration lessens the film’s impact.
