BACH ‘N’ ROLL AT CBGB
THE Ramones played there, as did Television and the Talking Heads. But no one’s really played Bach at CBGB – until now.
Cellist Matt Haimovitz rolls into the Bowery music club tonight at 9, playing a piece of his own: “Anthem,” inspired by Jimi Hendrix’s “Star Spangled Banner.”
The 31-year-old cellist has been making a pilgrimage of sorts, bringing Bach to non-classical venues. Last year he played Joe’s Pub, and he’s also performed at Seattle’s Tractor Tavern, Philadelphia’s Tin Angel, and Chicago’s Schubas Tavern – to standing-room-only crowds.
